No, you are not alone. I like this improvement, nevertheless it is really clumsy.

Now you have only to keep one copy of each hat and copy then as needed.

But does this not show ANet that their storage shortage and stuff drives them to such workarounds?

(They should also add an NPC that puts Insignia slots on older Prophecies and Factions armors in Kamadan. And allows you to switch the +1 whatever modifier of the helmet.)

Yay Hat Storage!

I have one question about HA though; It's still the case that henchies get added to your team in the next round if the humans drop out, right?

What happens if I have a 6 human team and 3 drop out? do I only get 2 henchies to replace them?

My guess:
the new upcoming reconnects feature will list them as being AFK and they will be sitting ducks for 10 minutes. If they leave after the first round of HA but before starting the second, I can only speculate that they will be replaced by NPC's...

When I hear hat storage I think of something wear I don't need to dedicate 4+ bag spaces to store different +1 attribute head pieces.

Let's face it nobody is going to pay 10g + dye every time they want to wear a hat, at best it wont do anything, more likely it will just mean people have got even more crap to store since they'll have seasonal hats on more characters.
Of course it helps storage. If you are storing holiday hats. Which practically everyone is. Now if you have 5 hats for 7 characters for a total of 35 occupied storage slots, you can use the hat NPC to free up 30 slots by only keeping the 5 on one character. Or if, as some have stated, you can just delete them all and go the the hat guy when you want to wear one you can free up all 35 slots.

As a bonus, if you missed a hat you wanted for one of your characters, now they can have it. Without using any storage.

If it's what it appears to be, I give this change a thumbs up. Thanks, ANet!

Well, the hat storage sounds ok... I just wish I could get a few of the hats I missed. I wasn't able to get the dragon or tengu hats cuz I got Factions rather late in the summer, simply because I was busy with work and could never find the time to go out and get it. Plus I was waiting for it to go on sale... I'm cheap. :P

Then, I bought Nightfall a day too late to get the wizard's/witches hat due to my being immobile due to surgery...

Oh well.

Aubee has made some very good points. The hat NPC actually saves you a lot more room in the long run. Think about it. There WILL be future events which will give you more and more hats. This is actually a very smart way to save space without actually adding more storage AND it saves some stress on the server.

Seriously think about it.

If I may quote from the Guildwars.com website ...

"The Wintersday event begins on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 and runs for 13 days, with the grand finale taking place on Monday, January 1, 2007."

Maybe it's me, but I don't see a time listed for the starting of this event. Given that they start all of the events based on THEIR local time (PST) they still have about 9 hours to meet the Wednesday deadline.

How can they be late if a time was not listed and the day listed isn't over for the local timezone?

Well first I can say thank you A.net, interesting new feature.

But it doesn't help me, I only have hats for my Primary character, so basically I save no space at all.

Will be nice to share hats with my other characters, but I don't see myself using that feature in the near future.

Thanks anyhow A.net.

I haven't read everything in this thread, but I don't see this as so much something to help with storage as it is to allow people to not have to try to get hats on all characters by racing between districts and having to show up at each appearance.

Don't know about if this is easier, but it can probably be stored in less space. Keeping track of a new storage slots, especially if it allowed stacks, might have taken some space to impliment. The way it sounds like they've done it could be held in a single value per account holding some flags. If you're interested in the tech side of how it might be done, there's a good article explaining enum flags here.

OMG why are people still moaning? Use your brains for once show your hats to the guy then you can delete them! All that space saved, i got atleast 3 hats on all my characters thats 24 (3x8) storage slots saved And nobody can moan about losing runes and dyes, dyes are super cheap nowadays apart from the black which frankly you would have to be out your mind to use on a 0AL festival hat lol

Great work Anet your really on the ball lately all these great additions are spoiling me

Copying hats is awesome.

Nerfing Heroes out of HA is ridiculous. No reason Anet should be again catering to horrible players and yet again drastically nerfing HA just for their sake just because they can't beat Hero teams.

its not because we cant beat them, its because lamers like you (guessing because you are b****ing) play it 24/7 and its not fun! we own them all the time and get bored.. now by limiting there should be less metagame and more thought out builds then 4 fire eles spamming

I have one character, my party-going ranger, that has all hats. The rest may have a couple at best. Now, I can share the love as needed.

This is better than a hat storage which would, over time, need to be changed/increased. We will also have the added bonus of our new kids having full hat accessibility.

This is good.
